President's Message

The crescendo of a very productive year was the reinvigoration of a 26 year-old document filed with the County that grants official status to the Del Monte Forest Property Owners (DMFPO). The Del Monte Forest Area Land Use Plan (LUP) agreement dated July 24, 1984 between the Pebble Beach Company and the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, to which the California Coastal Commission later became a signatory, was once again brought to the forefront of the DMFPO agenda. The Agreement grants official status in the area of road oversight, and makes it clear that DMFPO is the officially recognized "voice of the Del Monte Forest" by law!

Two property owners, one a former DMFPO board member from 20 years ago, appeared at the October 11, 2010 DMFPO board meeting to make their points that road maintenance in the Forest was not keeping up with road deterioration caused by age, weather and heavy use. It was the position of these two property owners that cracking, alligatoring, pot holes, caved in sides and inadequate repair jobs when utility companies cut into the roads have led to a situation where deferred maintenance may be at excessive cost levels. At minimum, and for safety purposes, they asked that road striping and markings be updated.

As a result of this presentation and with the 1984 agreement rediscovered and still in effect, the DMFPO board promptly placed road maintenance at the top of its agenda. Much activity on this subject has already taken place, and more is planned as we move from 2010 into 2011.

As President of the Board of Directors I plan to meet in early 2011 with the highest levels of management of the Pebble Beach Company to suggest under the terms of the LUP that more money be devoted to road maintenance in the forest.

I trust that that the DMFPO board of directors has your support and accordingly will act as your voice, addressing the 2011 Focus Topics listed on the cover page of this January - March 2011 Newsletter.

Very Truly Yours,

Don Eastman
President

Storage Solutions & PODS In The Del Monte Forest

PODS There is a saying that we Americans love to collect "stuff", that sometimes we have so much "stuff" that we fill our garages with it and park our cars in the street or driveway because there is no room left in the garage! We are also entrepreneurs and seeing a need for a solution to the mounting piles of "stuff" collected by Americans, huge storage parks have sprung up across the country where we can rent additional space to store our extra "stuff". Another recent innovation is PODS or Portable On Demand Storage. PODS have been popping up recently in various locations in the Del Monte Forest as people remodel their homes or clear out their "stuff". The original idea behind PODS was that you called, they came and dropped off the storage unit, you filled it up and they took it away to their storage facility or delivered it to your new location if you were moving house or relocating.

However, the PODS in the Del Monte Forest have been staying in driveways longer and longer and to most people they are a complete eyesore on the landscape. Some have even been dropped off in the street. If you have a PODS in your driveway and it is filled with your "stuff", please call the PODS people and have it taken away for storage. If you are under construction, please make sure the PODS is removed promptly at the end of construction.

Please be considerate of your neighbors,a PODS is not a full-time storage facility to be parked forever in your driveway, it should be a temporary solution to your storage problems, not a permanent part of the landscape.
